Plant Medicine

Ayahuasca is an Amazonian plant medicine with roots reaching back thousands of years, called Oni — "wisdom" — by the Shipibo people who have worked with it for generations.

Guided by Indigenous Peruvian Shipibo Master Healers (Onanya) in sacred ceremony, Ayahuasca opens channels to the emotional, energetic, and spiritual roots of what ails us — the parts of ourselves we've pushed aside, numbed, or forgotten. When held in a safe, experienced, and compassionate container, this is a process that can help us return to wholeness and reclaim our authenticity and agency in our lives.

During ceremony, each guest receives individual icaros — healing songs sung directly to you by the healers — tending to your unique energetic patterns. This is ancient, sophisticated medicine, and at Soltara, it is the heart of our work.

Nature Medicine

Humans evolved in communion with the natural world — not separate from it. And yet most of us spend the vast majority of our lives indoors, disconnected from the living, breathing world that has always been our greatest healer.

At Soltara, nearly everything happens outside, or in open-air communal spaces.

Surrounded by one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, you'll walk jungle trails, watch the Gulf of Nicoya at sunrise, breathe in fresh mountain air, and feel what it's like to be held by living land. Research confirms what our bodies already know: time in nature boosts mood, immune function, sleep, and mental health — while lowering stress hormones and blood pressure. For many guests, it's the most connected to nature they've ever felt.

Body & Breathwork

The body is a doorway. In the way we move, breathe, and inhabit ourselves, there is wisdom waiting to be heard. At Soltara, yoga, meditation, breathwork, and massage are woven into your retreat as essential parts of the healing journey.

Yoga builds strength, flexibility, and presence — clearing energetic channels and readying the body to receive. Meditation cultivates the capacity to sit with what arises, creating space between stimulus and reaction. Conscious breathwork — one of the oldest healing tools in the world — can shift the nervous system, release stored tension, and open the door to profound clarity and calm.

Together, these practices help you arrive more fully in your own body, and activate its innate healing intelligence.

Food (as thy) Medicine

At Soltara, healing happens in the kitchen too. We take Hippocrates at his word: let food be thy medicine. Our meals are freshly prepared each day by our loving kitchen staff, sourced from local organic farms, our onsite permaculture program, and sustainable fishermen on the Nicoya coast — food that is alive, clean, and deeply connected to the land that holds us.

But beyond what we eat, we invite you to notice how and why you eat. Our relationship with food often mirrors our relationship with ourselves — and the patterns, habits, and emotions that come up around mealtimes can be a doorway into deeper understanding. At Soltara, nourishment is both practical and profound.

Hands joined together representing community and shared support

Heartfelt Community

In Indigenous wisdom traditions, healing has always been understood as relational — something that happens between people, not just within them. This understanding sits at the heart of what we've witnessed at Soltara, again and again.

When people gather with shared intention and open hearts, something shifts. Walls come down. Stories get told. In the vulnerability of authentic sharing — of letting people in and holding space for others to do the same — we find our way through things we could not untangle alone, and remember that we never were. The community formed here, between guests and facilitators, and through integration circles & connections that continue long after retreat, is one of the most profound parts of the Soltara experience.

Creative Expression

Some things can't be said in words — but they can be painted, danced, written, or sung. Creative expression is one of the most natural and powerful ways humans have always processed experience, released emotion, and made meaning.

At Soltara, our art space is fully stocked and open to you: paints, journals, instruments, coloring books, music. No artistic experience required — only the willingness to play!

Whether you're moving through something heavy or wanting to give form to a new feeling of aliveness, creativity offers a way to externalize what's inside, and in doing so, lighten it. Many guests find that what begins on a canvas or in a journal becomes one of the most memorable parts of their retreat.

Knowledge

"Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets." — Leonardo da Vinci

Knowledge empowers us to make meaning out of our lives — guiding our journey of awareness and awakening, deepening our connection to ourselves and the world. And in a world overflowing with information, discernment matters as much as curiosity.

At Soltara, we work with highly qualified experts — including Dr. Gabor Maté, Dr. Bia Labate, and Dr. Dennis McKenna — to offer grounded, meaningful education rooted in Indigenous wisdom and modern research. Through workshops, integration sessions, and holistic resources, we give you the tools to embody your experience and carry this work home.
